The global fisheries and seafood industry is big business. FAO estimates that this industry alone creates work for 180 million people in a value chain which generates more than USD 500 billion per year. Additionally, seafood is one of the most widely traded commodities in the world.
Some of the leading global seafood companies are headquartered in Norway, complimented by leading specialized financial services. Also, Norway hosts several influential universities and institutes within biomarine research.
Attention on Africa
This year the conference is also supported by the UN Food and Agriculture Orginazation (FAO), and will focus on Africa.
”FAO`s participation in NASF means that there will be a sharper focus on the marine sector’s contribution to supplying food for a growing world population, but also on the growing role of aquaculture. FAO will draw African countries striving for better utilization of their marine resources, both in the fishing and fish farming sectors,” says managing director of NASF Jørgen J. Lund.
The pre-conference on Tuesday will gather researchers and focus on innovation and business development in the biomarine value chain.
The opening sessions will provide a “view from the bridge,” as captains of the industry tell their stories and share forecasts. The main conference also discusses issues like sustainability and finance.
